You Shouldn’t Have Looked: 20 Horror Short Stories of Forbidden Sight

Book Description

Some things are better left unseen. Twenty ordinary people. Twenty moments of forbidden sight. Twenty encounters with the truth that looking is never passive—and that the things we look at have always been looking back. Within these pages, you will find an astronomer who maps a structure in deep space that slowly rotates its gaze towards Earth; a security guard whose CCTV footage shows a shadow following him through the building, drawing closer every night; a woman whose reflection stays behind in a shop window, practising her gestures until it is ready to leave; a lighthouse keeper told never to look into the beam; a baby monitor that shows a tall shape standing over the cot; a stone eye in a pine forest, sealed for centuries, beginning to open. These are not stories about monsters. They are stories about attention—about the precise and terrible moment when the thing you have been watching becomes aware that you are there. The horror in these pages does not roar. It turns around, meets your eye across whatever distance separates you, holds your gaze, and does not look away. You Shouldn't Have Looked is a collection of twenty slow-burn horror stories for readers who know that the most frightening thing is not what hides in the dark—it is what the dark has been doing with its eyes while you weren't paying attention. Read with the lights on. It won't help.
