The Black Casebook: Deadly Mysteries and Unforgettable Detective Stories

Book Description

Every case begins the same way: with the fact of a person. Detective Inspector Mara Voss has spent fifteen years in the same city, working the same desk, doing the work most people never see — the sustained, patient, deeply human work of understanding what happened to someone and why. In twenty interconnected cases spanning a year and a half, she moves through the city's hidden geographies: the locked rooms and secret basements, the cold cases and inheritance disputes, the poisoned gardens and vanishing acts, the night trains and the houses that watch their occupants with the attentive silence of machines. The Black Casebook is not a collection of puzzles to be solved. It is a collection of lives — interrupted, damaged, diminished, and sometimes recovered — and the story of one investigator whose attention to those lives is as close to justice as the available instruments allow. Some of Mara's cases resolve cleanly. A midnight caller leads her through a web of corporate fraud and pharmaceutical murder. An empty chair at a formal dinner reveals a killer who spent nineteen years becoming a ghost. A beautiful garden conceals a poisoner whose motive is more precise than any court can accommodate. A cold case file, unopened for sixteen years, begins to move. Others resist clean resolution — the missing family, the drowned identity, the painting stolen not for greed but for conscience — and Mara learns, case by case, to distinguish between the nearest available answer and the true one. Running beneath all twenty cases is a pattern that becomes visible only gradually: a network of harm so carefully constructed that no individual investigation can discern its full shape, administered by figures whose patience matches Mara's own and whose capacity for damage far exceeds anything a single case file can contain. The closer she gets to the network's centre, the more she understands that she has not been working alone — that someone has been watching her work, waiting for the exact moment when the evidence would be legible and the investigator capable of reading it. Written in elegant, absorbing prose that rewards the closest reading, The Black Casebook is a work of detective fiction in the great tradition of the form — rigorous, humane, morally serious, and entirely unwilling to look away from the full complexity of what human beings do to each other and what can be done, imperfectly and persistently, about it. For readers of Tana French, Kate Atkinson, and Peter May.
