The Hunger Beneath: 20 Horror Short Stories of Buried Beasts

Book Description

Something old sleeps beneath the world you know. All it needs is one more disturbance to awaken. In this collection of twenty standalone tales of subterranean horror, ordinary people — miners, park rangers, geologists, engineers, mothers, children — dig, drill, and descend into ground that was never meant to be disturbed. A collapsed coal seam hides something that breathes. A reopened quarry conceals claw marks scored into solid stone. A city's proudest redevelopment project unearths chains forged to hold back an ancient hunger. Beneath every cornfield, cemetery, and subway tunnel in these pages lies a truth that generations before worked hard, and paid dearly, to bury. Each story stands alone, and each ends the same way: not with the monster destroyed, but merely delayed — a tremor that shouldn't still register, a coffin lid pressed a fraction closer to daylight, a fresh sapling growing too fast in blackened soil. The horror here isn't only what sleeps below. It's the sealed shaft, the sanitised incident report, and the quiet, collective agreement never to look too closely at what the ground has been asked to keep down. For readers who love atmospheric, slow-burn horror with a strong sense of place — creature horror in the tradition of ancient, awakened evils, told through the eyes of the ordinary experts who unknowingly wake them — The Hunger Beneath offers twenty descents into the dark, each one a complete and self-contained nightmare, perfect for reading straight through or one story at a time. The ground remembers everything. It is only ever waiting for someone to dig deep enough to remind it.
